To all finishers of 9 mile or longer races at Square Ledge trail Tuns Jan. 28:
We hope you registered for the SIERRA VISTA TRAIL RACES Saturday Mar. 4 in Las Cruces. This is the second leg of the 2017 “Border trail Triple Crown.”
For anyone finishing the 9 mile (or longer race) at Square Ledge, the 10Km (or longer) at Sierra Vista, and the 8.2 mile at Jackrabbit Rally (Mar. 27 in Franklin Mountains State Park), you will qualify for a custom-made ceramic mug with distinctive logo etc. There may be additional awards– we will keep you posted. And these are all given out at NO extra charge to the runner.
MEDALS and SHIRTS:
Our apologies– we HAVE the extra medals and t-shirts that were ordered, we just have not gotten them to UP AND RUNNING (have been out of town, etc.– but no real excuse!)
THANK YOU for your patience.
Hope to see many of you at Sierra Vista Runs on Saturday March 4!
A map of the approximate course will appear here shortly.
BUT, basically– we start and finish by the soccer field picnic pavillion in High Ridge Park, do a short lap of the soccer field and then head south on trails that zig-zag through the first arroyo.
From arroyo trail, uphill to s. end of first dam and then go clockwise around South Mountain. **NOTE– there are some sharp, right-angled or “square” ledges that the trail traverses just above Redd Road/ Dunkin’ Donuts/ etc. be careful.
At +- 1 mile point head north over dam #1 and then around Middle Mountain to dam #2. Cross dam #2 and then drop down to northeast and head for dam #3. Cross far west edge (big boulders, nice chat surface) of Dam #3. Do short loop to north before rejoining outbound route.
Return to start same way, EXCEPT bypass South Mountain and head straight for start/ finish. There will be chalk arrows and lines on the ground, directional signs and volunteers when and where possible.
Back at start at +-4.55 miles.
2nd, 3rd and 4th loops are same as first EXCEPT we do not circle the soccer field and take a more direct single-track path to the arroyo in the first 500 yards.
The “Big 30Km” runners do an additional mile loop out to South Mountain and back.
BORDER TRAIL TRIPLE CROWN:
Runner must complete at least the following distances at the following trail runs:
–9 mile or longer at Square Ledge Runs on Jan. 28.
–6.3 mile or longer at Sierra Vista Trail Runs (SV North Trailhead, Las Cruces) /early March

(all stats will be carefully monitored. Runners satisfying the above requirements will receive nice custom “Trail Triple Crown” ceramic mug etc. after Jackrabbit Rally)

Coming January 28, 2017– rolling trail races along the base of the southern Rocky Mountains (between El Paso, TX and Las Cruces, NM)).
Distances: 4 miles/ 8.5 miles/ 17 miles/ 27 miles/ 34 miles (same courses as in 2016, but superior remeasuring showed basic loop was 8.5 miles). Some parts of the trail are in much better shape than the 2016 race, others a bit rougher.
More info. will be posted here ASAP!
Come join the fun–
Please note: #591, Susie Rand-weimer, finished the 16.7 mile (27Km) race at Roundtop Trail Run in 2:51:12. Somehow her time got switched with a runner who was 4:20:50. Our apologies to Susie.
More importantly, please let us know of any other time or place discrepancies. After all, things can happen when you plan for 70 runners and get 112!
NEXT year we will have more port-a-sans at the start/ finish, and will blockade the turnaround with a tank so that nobody cruises by the “All Races turn around here!” sign. And we will make many more t-shirts!
Hope to see many of you at the El Paso Marathon next week, AND the amazing Sierra Vista Trail Runs in Las Cruces March 5, and the Jackrabbit Classic in the State Park April 11 (I have done a preliminary measurement and the courses should be 8.1 miles and 4.2 miles– BUT with lots of climbing and some very rough footing).
