Photos of Square Ledge Trail Race, 2018

BIG THANK YOU y muchisimas gracias

To all runners and helpers who came to the SQUARE LEDGE TRAIL RUNS on Saturday.

The weather was fine and there were many, many remarkable running efforts.

Photos and final results should be up shortly.  We had almost 1,000 action pictures and have to edit and fit them on to the blogsite (which has gig. Limits).

As for RESULTS, a few folks stopped a full 5km loop short of the distance for which they signed up.  If the run is held again, we think that going to a slightly longer loop it may be easier for everyone to know how many laps they have done.  Since we have been putting on trail races in the region since 1990, we find that Garmin/ GPS units have– paradoxically– made it HARDER for runners to sense their pace and miles.  For e.g., we were shown people’s wrist Garmin etc. Devices that showed the longest run was everything from 18.8 to 19.3 miles.  We measured the trails slowly with calibrated wheel (Jones Counter), but measuring any trail is difficult (this is why no trail races can be CERTIFIED).

****BUT most importantly– most everyone had FUN!!!  Thank you all again!

Reminder: TRAIL TRIPLE CROWN 2017

To all finishers of 9 mile or longer races at Square Ledge trail Tuns Jan. 28:

We hope you registered for the SIERRA VISTA TRAIL RACES Saturday Mar. 4 in Las Cruces.  This is the second leg of the 2017 “Border trail Triple Crown.”

For anyone finishing the 9 mile (or longer race) at Square Ledge, the 10Km (or longer) at Sierra Vista, and the 8.2 mile at Jackrabbit Rally (Mar. 27 in Franklin Mountains State Park), you will qualify for a custom-made ceramic mug with distinctive logo etc.  There may be additional awards– we will keep you posted.  And these are all given out at NO extra charge to the runner.

MEDALS and SHIRTS:

Our apologies– we HAVE the extra medals and t-shirts that were ordered, we just have not gotten them to UP AND RUNNING (have been out of town, etc.– but no real excuse!)

THANK YOU for your patience.

Hope to see many of you at Sierra Vista Runs on Saturday March 4!

January 9 Update:

A map of the approximate course will appear here shortly.

BUT, basically– we start and finish by the soccer field picnic pavillion  in High Ridge Park, do a short lap of the soccer field and then head south on trails that zig-zag through the first arroyo.

From arroyo trail, uphill to s. end of first dam and then go clockwise around South Mountain.  **NOTE– there are some sharp, right-angled or “square” ledges that the trail traverses just above Redd Road/ Dunkin’ Donuts/ etc.  be careful.

At +- 1 mile point head north over dam #1 and then around Middle Mountain to dam #2.  Cross dam #2 and then drop down to northeast and head for dam #3.  Cross far west edge (big boulders, nice chat surface) of Dam #3.  Do short loop to north before rejoining outbound route.

Return to start same way, EXCEPT bypass South Mountain and head straight for start/ finish.  There will be chalk arrows and lines on the ground, directional signs and volunteers when and where possible.

Back at start at +-4.55 miles.

2nd, 3rd and 4th loops are same as first EXCEPT we do not circle the soccer field and take a more direct single-track path to the arroyo in the first 500 yards.

The “Big 30Km” runners do an additional mile loop out to South Mountain and back.
